A General Theory of Wilf-Equivalence for Catalan Structures

چکیده
The existence of apparently coincidental equalities (also called Wilf-equivalences) between the enumeration sequences or generating functions of various hereditary classes of combinatorial structures has attracted significant interest. We investigate such coincidences among non-crossing matchings and a variety of other Catalan structures including Dyck paths, 231-avoiding permutations and plane forests. In particular we consider principal subclasses defined by not containing an occurrence of a single given structure. An easily computed equivalence relation among structures is described such that if two structures are equivalent then the associated principal subclasses have the same enumeration sequence. We give an asymptotic estimate of the number of equivalence classes of this relation among structures of size n and show that it is exponentially smaller than the nth Catalan number. In other words these “coincidental” equalities are in fact very common among principal subclasses. Our results also allow us to prove in a unified and bijective manner several known Wilf-equivalences from the literature.

On the Parity of Certain Coefficients for a q-Analogue of the Catalan Numbers
The 2-adic valuation (highest power of 2) dividing the well-known Catalan numbers, Cn, has been completely determined by Alter and Kubota and further studied combinatorially by Deutsch and Sagan. In particular, it is well known that Cn is odd if and only if n = 2 k − 1 for some k > 0. The polynomial F ch n (321; q) = ∑ σ∈Avn(321) q ch(σ), where Avn(321) is the set of permutations in Sn that avo...
متن کاملMatchings Avoiding Partial Patterns
We show that matchings avoiding a certain partial pattern are counted by the 3Catalan numbers. We give a characterization of 12312-avoiding matchings in terms of restrictions on the corresponding oscillating tableaux. We also find a bijection between matchings avoiding both patterns 12312 and 121323 and Schröder paths without peaks at level one, which are counted by the super-Catalan numbers or...
متن کاملPattern avoidance in binary trees
This paper introduces the notion of pattern avoidance in binary trees. We provide an algorithm for computing the generating function that counts the number of n-leaf binary trees avoiding a given binary tree pattern t. Equipped with this counting mechanism, we study the analogue of Wilf equivalence in which two tree patterns are equivalent if the respective trees that avoid them are equinumerou...

We study the recurrence relations and derive the generating functions of the entries along the rows and diagonals of the Catalan and Bell number difference tables. – In Memory of Professor Herb Wilf
متن کاملEquivalences in Bicategories
In this paper, we establish some connections between the concept of an equivalence of categories and that of an equivalence in a bicategory. Its main result builds upon the observation that two closely related concepts, which could both play the role of an equivalence in a bicategory, turn out not to coincide. Two counterexamples are provided for that goal, and detailed proofs are given. In par...
